With the rising concerns over bird flu, the Guangzhou Zoo, Baiyun Hill Spring Valley and the Liuhua Lake Park, where there are high concentrations of birds, have taken effective precautionary measures against the potential outbreak of bird flu. Local government officials reported that nothing unusual has been found on the birds in these places.
Guangzhou Zoo officials announced that their Contingency Plan for the Prevention of Bird Flu has been implemented. Under the plan, five major measures were taken to guard against bird flu, including reporting the situation on a regular basis; increasing quarantine; performing weekly sterilization of main walkways in the zoo, more frequent sterilization of bird cages, vigorous sterilization of bird habitats, and unified disposal of the birds' droppings; prohibiting visitors from bringing birds and other animals into the zoo; improving the zoo staff's self-protection; and monitoring the physical condition of the staff members engaged in direct contact with birds and wild animals.
Liuhua Lake Park has also hired professional personnel to perform a thorough disinfection of its bird garden and also distributed vaccines to the stall operators in the garden.
