On Sunday evening, rescue workers cut off power to save a woman on top of a power transmission tower in Huadu district, which led to a blackout of most areas in the district excluding crucial locations such as Baiyun Airport, according to Southern Metropolis Daily. The delusional woman climbed up a 50-metre power transmission tower and stayed there for nearly 8 hours before being safely rescued.
According to a witness, the woman was well dressed and attempted suicide by jumping into a pool. Having failed, she then climbed up to the power transmission tower, despite being discouraged by bystanders. Rescue workers arrived within 20 minutes; however the rescue operation was hampered due to the woman's emotional state.
After discussions and negotiations, Huadu authorities decided to cut off the power to save the woman. Before the power was cut, Guangzhou Power Supply Bureau made calls and informed their VIP clients about the incident, while Huadu TV newsflased the emergency power cut. The communication department also sent a message to the public about the power cut. At midnight, workers from the Power Supply Bureau and fire-fighters scaled the tower to persuade or rescue the woman who was eventually brought down safely at 1.15am.
At 1.30am, the power supply was restored and was expected to be running normally within an hour. The reasons the woman climbed the tower are still unknown.
