Yoga Philosphy - What is Yoga? | Carlos Pomeda | Lecture |
Class Description : The answer is not as obvious as it may seem. In fact, the various systems of yoga that developed in India over the centuries are different answers to that fundamental question. But this workshop does not treat the question nor the answers from a theoretical perspective. It does provide a chronological overview of the development of yoga. It does explore the major systems from the perspective of their answers to that question. And it does provide a useful framework for further study. But, most importantly, it explores the various approaches to life and to practice that each system contains. Geared primarily for those with some prior exposure to the various yoga systems, this workshop will be an ideal opportunity to fill-in any gaps that participants might have as to the history of yoga and also to go deeper into the heart of each school examined, ending with a comfortable degree of basic familiarity with the major systems. The workshop will combine a lively and insightful presentation of some of the most important teachings of the various schools, including the origins of yoga, the classical formulation of Patanjali's, the various systems of Vedanta and the various approaches of Tantrism, including Kashmir Shaivism. It will also include a variety of meditative and other practices, representative of each of these schools, so as to give participants an "inside" feel for each one. The Foundation of Yoga ¡§C Why Yamas and Niyamas are of crucial importance | MA Narasimhan | Lecture |
Class Description : According to Maharsi Patanjali, yoga is eight-limbed. For all-round development of an individual, all the limbs must have appropriate growth. After all, the state of Kaivalya, was qualified by Patanjali to be a state by which one acts without being distracted by his or others' actions within and without. It is a state of totality where the Kevali (the sole in-dweller) will neither have desire nor the normal drives ascribed to all human beings. He becomes a living embodiment of total stability, inner freedom and peace. The very presence of such a stable system in turn catalyses all other unstable systems that come in its vicinity to move faster towards stability. Even though there has been a lot of emphasis and effort to develop and practise the three limbs - namely Asana, Pranayama and Dhyana - the other two limbs of Dharana and Samadhi have yet to make their impact on the practitioner's mind. Unfortunately, there has been scant respect and very little concern about the very foundation of Ashtanga Yoga, namely Yama and Niyama. Yama pertains to the social behaviour of the individual, and Niyama pertains to the transformation that has to happen within the individual. These Yamas and Niyamas make their appearances in different versions among all the religions of the world. There, they are termed as morals, ethics, etc. But unfortunately in the practice of religions, the yogic element is missing and in today's yoga practice the Yama and Niyama have been given a go by. As it happened with the religions of the past, this lack of emphasis in yoga will hamper the attainment of Kaivalya for yoga practitioners. It is high time all yoga practitioners and teachers start implementing the Patanjali's code of Yama and Niayama, so that one can move in the path of perfection faster. If not, the very practice may create unnecessary obstacles in one's practice and may also cause irreparable damages to the system. |
3 July 17:00 - 19:00 |
The relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda | Vaidya Sri Bhagwan Dash | Lecture |
Class Description : Both Ayurveda and Yoga believe that the individual is comprised of five consecutive layers. The Annamayakosha - the gross body made up of food, The Pranamayakosha - the energetic body and seat of longevity, The Manomayakosha - the seat of the psyche and finally the Anandamayakosha - the seat of eternal bliss. The practice of Ayurveda involves creating a healthy environment from within so the physical body, with its many organs and vital energetic fields, will function on an optimal level. Modern medicine tends to deal with the gross body alone, whereas Yoga and Ayurveda take all the five seats of the individual into consideration when treating the body/mind organism. The individual is not just skin, flesh and bone, but an intricate composite of all five layers mentioned above. Ayurveda and Yoga also believe in the concept of Karma - we come from somewhere and we are going somewhere, i.e. there are past lives and there will be future lives; by paying more attention to our karmas and our actions, we are no longer helpless creatures in a world of chance, but co-creator to our own destiny. The main focus of Ayurveda and Yoga is to create optimum health and well-being so the inner soul will be less troubled by life, and can live with greater happiness in his internal and external environments. Fundamentally both practices originate from the same tradition - to create optimum health from within so the immortal soul may be realised by this mortal body/mind organism. One may be more of a physical nature, the other spiritual, but Yoga without Ayurveda becomes blind, and Ayurveda without Yoga will be lame. This lecture will focus on how they influence each other, and how we can learn the collaboration between the two for better clarity and health in our own practice. |

Yoga Philosphy - The Tantric Universe | Carlos Pomeda | Lecture |
Class Description : What is most unique about Tantra and tantric yoga philosophy? Quite simply, the fact that its teachings and practices are best suited for contemporary life. Departing from earlier notions of asceticism and dry scholarship, Tantra presents a sublimely inspiring view of the world and of human existence, one that incorporates all aspects of human existence: the heart, the intellect, the body and the environment. In this seminar we will explore Tantra and what is perhaps its most refined formulation, Kashmir Shaivism, from a perspective that is both inspirational and entirely applicable to our daily lives. We will dispel the most common misunderstandings about what Tantra is and is not, investigating its roots and its development, and uncovering the answers it provides to the most fundamental questions of existence, as well as the practices it developed to expand human consciousness. Ultimately, we will discover the value of Tantric practice in that it reveals the divine right in the midst of the ordinary, charging our lives with meaning. Join us for this relevant, insightful and inspiring seminar. |

Obstacles in the path of Yoga ¡§C How to manage them | MA Narasimhan | Lecture |
Class Description : The yoga path is not a cake walk. It is a path of self-evaluation and evolution. The major obstacles for a yogaarudha (the yoga aspirant) are of two types. Personality-based and circumstantial. Personality-based - They are five in number. They are those where the individual, because of his own idiosyncrasies, will not be able to understand the transformations that are going on within him and gets into a situation where he becomes an obstacle to the goal that he is pursuing. According to Patanjali, the remedy is Svadhyaya or self-assessment. He speaks of how one gets entangled and suffers by his own conditioned reflexes without ever being aware of the reasons for his suffering. As he is unaware of the real source of his misery, he tries to get out of it with his limited resources, resulting in more and more entanglements. Patanjali gives a solution of how to get away from this vicious circle and transform the very sources of disturbance into catalysts of evolution. Circumstantial - This is about external obstacles. They happen to be nine in number and can happen to anyone at any given moment for no apparent reason. Patanjali speaks about the obstacles following the dictum "forewarned is forearmed". It is rare indeed that we come across analysis of the mind and the self, in terms of being the centre of the universe of action. Maharsi Patanjali tackles these obstacles in his own inimitable way, and tells us what to do and how to sail through the path of yoga with least disturbance to the system while following the normal lifestyle that is expected of every human being... |

Patanjali ¡§C The father of Yoga, Ayurveda and Sanskrit Grammar | Vaidya Sri Bhagwan Dash | Lecture |
Class Description : In the Indian tradition, optimum health of body, mind and speech is a reflection of a state of purity from within. You ma, y have one without the other, but the health of our body, mind and speech is an extension of a greater state of being that equally supports all. Maharishi Patanjali was a great sage with tremendous spiritual insight into the dimensions of all three aspects. He is therefore considered to be a great authority in the subject of Yoga, Ayurveda and Vyakarana (Grammar). Whether it is the same person associated with each tradition or merely three people with the same name we cannot know, but amongst popular belief in India it is believed he was one and the same, and hence there are various verses ascribed to him for his great commentary and enunciation of each subject. The focus of this lecture, apart from a brief survey of the historical figure of Patanajali, will be to explore the idea synchronicity within all three subjects and how the improvement of one may lead to a gradual improvement of all. |

Spiritual Nutrition - Spiritual Nutrition Supporting Spiritual Life and Awakening of Kundalini | Rebbe Gabriel Cousens & Shanti Golds-Cousens | Lecture |
Class Description : The Spiritual Nutrition cuisine in Yoga is a special type of spiritual plant-source only cuisine aimed at helping us transcend body consciousness, purify the koshas, calm thevrittis of the mind, clear the nadis, and expand the prana. For this reason, Spiritual Nutrition is more disciplined and far more powerful for supporting spiritual life and Yoga practice than a regular vegetarian diet, generally lighter, and includes Spiritual Fasting and the taking of primarily live foods (uncooked roots, leafy vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds). A live-food diet was the choice of the ancient rishis (sages) and ancient Yogis as well as the probable diet of the Essenes. Gabriel blesses you all for having the intuitive spiritual wisdom to enhance your yoga asanas and general spiritual life by choosing the delight of spiritual nutrition world cuisine. Research in live food has shown it to significantly increase spiritual desire, increase the quietness of the mind, increase inner peace, reduce constipation effectively, increase flexibility, enhance strength, improve endurance by 2-3 times, can improve DNA expression, speed up wound repair, show a 90% improvement in the immune system, and decrease depression and anxiety by 400%. Live foods have not been processed by irradiation, pesticide use, microwave, artificial additives, GMOs (genetically modified organics), or cooking (heated above 118¡ãF through boiling, baking, frying, broiling, toasting, etc.). Live foods are rich in prana, which brings the prana force not only into the body, but also into the mind helping to purify the 72,000 nadis and to expand consciousness. Live foods are the most powerful foods for enhancing the flow of Kundalini energy and cleansing the nadisthrough which the Kundalini flows on the subtle plane. A sattvic diet helps us become superconductors of prana. As the prana in our body increases, the nadis naturally open, allowing us the deeper perception of Truth and reality as Oneness. By choosing this cuisine you are making a choice to move into the Culture of Life and Liberation and away from the Culture of Death. |

Transcendental Meditation ¡§C The message of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi | MA Narasimhan | Lecture |
Class Description : Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and his mission has been a groundbreaking one in the field of Yoga. He is the first Yogi who brought Yoga into the domain of common man - which until then was totally a spiritual quest - as a relief from the miseries of life. He was the pioneer in bringing scientific verification to the effects of Yoga practice on the human system. He also standardised the technique that made it a delight for scientists to measure the multi-dimensional effects on human mind-body. It was Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who surprised even the great minds and Nobel laureates in their field by predicting what their experiments would conclude. He was the first bridge builder who engaged scientists and oriental philosophers in a dialogue, and put them together to ease the suffering of the world's masses. It was he who made the world sit up and see what yoga can do to an individual. He was the one who created a stampede of 'Eastward ho' to seek the golden tranquility that is deep inside every one of us. The technique itself is simple and has been there from the Vedic times, with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi modifying it to suit the modern times. It goes with the basic principle that a state of least excitement is the need of the day, so that one can take rest that is deeper than deep sleep. Most of today's modern ills can be attributed to the lack of rest due to the strife torn mind. Based on the concept of entropy, he proposed a simple technique that can be practised by anyone who can understand the instructions given to him. The methodology has been standardised all over the world. The teachers of TM teach the technique in the same way, be it in Africa, India, Europe or USA. It is estimated that there are currently more than 6 million practitioners of this technique. Another experimentally verified fact was that if one percent of the population meditates at a place, there will be peace and prosperity - with all the negativity of society being reduced drastically. His Siddhi (perfection) technique, an advanced technique to check the progress of the yoga practitioner for himself, has in turn been a rich field for scientists who have been trying to verify the existence of the higher states of consciousness. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was a man with many missions but all had but one theme - to inspire man "to enjoy 200 percent of life". |
5 July 17:00 - 19:00 |
Prevention of diseases and rejuvenation of the body and mind | Vaidya Sri Bhagwan Dash | Lecture |
Class Description : Ayurveda is a combination of the two words - Ayush which means life and Veda which means knowledge. Hence the right reading of this compound word would be 'The Knowledge of Life'. Ayurveda is therefore called the science of life that involves not just the physical, but also the physiological and spiritual well-being of mankind. In the Charaka Samhita it is defined as: "The science that teaches us what is good or bad, what causes joy or sorrow, the duration and characteristics of life." The Ayurvedic principles are based on creating harmony within the physical, mental and spiritual body. This is primarily done through a better understanding of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), how they operate within the individual, and how one may dominate over the others. All diseases in Ayurveda are said to originate from an imbalance within these three doshas, and the preventive cure and cause of rejuvenation is to bring about greater harmony within the body as a whole rather than treating various symptoms in isolation. This lecture focuses further on how the five types of life-breath and the vital airs (prana) affect the body, and how you can come to know your own Prakrti (constitution) a little better. We will further discuss the seven Dhatus, the subtle tissues and fluids supporting the body, and how the improved vitality of each will improve the greater health and well-being of the body. Finally we will discuss the concept of digestion and how the three types of 'internal fire' support the distribution of energy throughout the body. As the saying goes, 'A man is as healthy as his digestion' - the focus will be on how to take the precautionary measures, avoid the disturbance of one's imbalanced doshas, and ignite you to a radiant state of health from within - which truly is your birthright. |

The text describes the purpose, philosophy, and details of practice, and the goals of yoga as a means to enlightenment. Bhakti Yoga - Chanting: The Heart of Devotional Yoga | Jai Uttal | 2hr Session |
Class Description : Embark on a vocal journey through the sacred sounds of ancient India. With call-and-response group chanting and storytelling, Jai Uttal creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression. Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Jai will introduce the ancient practice of "kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This meditative practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Jai will relate stories from the spiritual epics of India as well as from his personal experiences to create a modern context in which to explore this tradition. "These ancient chants," writes Jai "contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers and expressing a full range of emotions through our voices we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries." The chanting begins as a faint spark and is fanned into a flame of ecstatic awareness by repetition, rhythm, and remembrance of the Divine. No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique. "When I get off the plane, whether I'm arriving in New Delhi or returning to New York, I say to myself, 'I'm home.' Home East, home West: Jai Uttal's musical heart is at home in either idiom. He could be called what Karl Jung termed a 'gnostic intermediary,' an ambassador between the two cultures." -Ram Dass "Jai is a shaman with wings big enough to carry all of us to ecstasy. Singing with him is a transcendental train to everywhere you ever wanted to go; all you have to do is sit there, surrender and let your song rock." -Gabrielle Roth "Riding Jai's kirtan is a journey that spirals into the heart with such incredible passion, tenderness, stamina and surrender that one is left transformed and sanctified. Not to be missed - the best around." -Shiva Rea, Yoga Journal "Jai Uttal's chanting workshops are the best of the best. His music is one of the quickest ways to the center, it opens the heart and attunes the spine. I gave Jai's music to my wife Ondrea, it was the 1st time she shed spiritual tears." --Stephen Levine, author of "A Gradual Awakening" "One of the most extraordinary spiritual chanters and ecstatic singers of our time. His music transforms the hearts of all who listen." -Jack Kornfield, Spirit Rock Center "Jai Uttal's chanting transports us to an exalted state of emotional transcendence." --Daniel Goleman, author of "Emotional Intelligence" |

Focusing the Mind ¡§C Stability in the midst of Chaos | MA Narasimhan | Lecture |
Class Description : The present-day trend of yoga practice is perhaps a sign that people are interested in taming their minds for a better purpose. They have also realised that the ordinary methods of modifying the mind by education, morals and ethics have not been able to withstand the modern pressures of our ever-changing society. Thus, the search for direct technique is on. Maharshi Patanjali was one of the major supreme scholars who has been able to incorporate all the ingredients of the mental techniques into a blueprint, not only to increase the capability of control but also to expand the mind to its full extant so that he can enjoy the inner and outer realms with ease. The basic procedure starts from the focusing of the mind and a gradual withdrawal from the external distractions of the senses to the internal. Then comes the slow process through inner and inner realms leading to the most inward of all - the experience of 'the self', the enjoyer of all sensations, be it internal or external. Patanjali makes very little demand on the time, energy and dedication of the person on his way to mastering the mind. His is a path of evolution and not revolution. That is why it is called the Royal path. He gives tricks to trick the mind to become one pointed and to train it, so that even amidst chaos it will neither get flustered nor ignore the situation. It gains the capability of acting appropriately within the situation, though never losing oneself in the actual activity. According to Patanjali, the ultimate goal is Kaivalya - the supreme state of freedom and stability from which one acts without being distracted by his own or others actions within and without. |
