Organized Asian Games, efficient and comprehensive transportation
The Line 3 extension project, which has just been approved by the state government, is part of the city¡¯s effort to host a well-organized Asian Games in 2010 and ensure sustainable development in the long run.
Moreover, by the time it is accomplished, Guangzhou will boast an advanced comprehensive transportation system on land, sea and air, enhancing her position as the economic and trade center of south China.
Starting from the East Guangzhou Railway station, the new Line 3 will cover 30.9 km and 11 stations in Tianhe(the CBD), Baiyun and Huadu districts.
15 lines totaling 500 km by 2020
Including this program, there are now up to 200 Metro projects under construction, according to GZ Metro. In addition, the city is planning to build eight more Metro lines stretching to 500 km in length by 2020.
5.24 kgs of vehicle emission reduction for each citizen
It is estimated that during the 11 year period from July 1997 to May 2008, the GZ Metro has helped the city reduce air pollution by saving 41966.1 tons of traffic-related exhaust, that¡¯s 5.24 kgs for each resident.
